Cairo

Cairo Capital of Egypt

Cairo is not only the capital of Egypt and its largest city, it is also widely considered to be the very heart of Egypt.

The Cairo area holds a lot of famous monuments from different times and religions such as ancient Pharaonic, Christian and Islamic monuments. The nickname of the city is “The City of a Thousand Minarets”.

It is also the largest city of the Arabic world as well as the most populous city of Africa. The Cairo metropolitan area has a population of almost 18 million people. That makes it the 16th most populous metropolitan area of the world.

Shopping

There is no need to choose between modern day shopping or shopping in bazaars the same way people did centuries ago; Cairo offers both.

Khan el-Khalili souk in the Old City of Cairo is a famous bazaar largely unchanged since the 14th century.

In other parts of Cairo there are airconditioned shopping malls.

The Camel market is also worth visiting even if the general tourist is not very likely to buy a camel.
